The History of the Mangalsutra

Ancient Mangalsutra

Originating in the 6th Century AD, the Mangal sutra holds a special significance. It is believed that Goddess Shakti resides within the neckpiece, consequently accumulating divine powers in that area. In Hindu culture, the Mangal sutra is considered a representation of Lord Shiva and Shakti. While it is not universally used throughout India, various regions have alternative marital symbols, like toe rings or glass bangles, which are employed to signify married women. (AIA)
