On the day I visited Ushaka, I discovered that the yellow bands around the penguins serve as a means of identifying a male from a female so that they can undergo DNA testing to determine their gender. Males have their bands placed on the left, while females have them placed on the right. So one of the volunteers made the joke that since women are always right, it should be on the right.
